Student Awards

Roy J. Shlemon Scholarship Fund in Environmental and Engineering Geology

The Roy J. Shlemon Scholarship Fund in Environmental and Engineering Geology consists of two awards, a scholarship award for research in environmental and (or) engineering geology and a meeting award for students to participate in field trips and short courses held at GSA annual or section meetings. The descriptions for each award is below.

Roy J. Shlemon Scholarship Award

The Roy J. Shlemon Scholarship Award supports graduate students with the best research proposals within the broad field of environmental and engineering geology. Scholarship award amounts vary from year to year, and we attempt to award at least one scholarship for Master’s level research and one for Doctoral level research. The number of awards and scholarship amount is determined at the discretion of the Roy J. Shlemon Scholarship Awards Committee and is based on the budget presented.

The primary role of this awards program is to provide partial support of master's and doctoral thesis research in environmental and engineering geology. The program is competitive and there is no guarantee of funding, The Scholarship Awards Committee strongly encourages women, minorities, and persons with disabilities to participate fully in this program. Eligibility is restricted to student members of the Environmental and Engineering Geology Division.

Confidential evaluations on the Appraisal of Applicant Forms are required from two faculty members for each student applicant. These forms are supplied with each application form and must accompany applications submitted. Advisers must use this form rather than send a letter of reference. It is the applicant's responsibility to follow up with those persons who have agreed to submit an appraisal form on their behalf, and to ensure that the forms are included with the application at the time of submittal. In the rare case that an adviser agrees to submit an appraisal form directly to the Scholarship Awards Committee, it is the applicant's responsibility to follow up with the adviser and the Committee. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

All applications must be emailed or postmarked on or before 31 March

Actions taken by the Roy J. Shlemon Scholarship Awards Committee will be reported to each applicant by a letter of notification in April. Results will not be given by telephone.

Roy J. Shlemon Meeting Award

The Roy J. Shlemon Meeting Awards are given to graduate and undergraduate students to encourage participation in field trips and short courses held at annual and sectional meetings. Participation on field trips is especially encouraged. The only criteria are that you must be a student member of the Environmental and Engineering Geology Division of GSA and making satisfactory progress toward your degree. In the event that requests for awards exceed available funding, requests for attending field trips will be given preference over requests for short courses. The number of awards and amount is determined at the discretion of the Roy J. Shlemon Scholarship Awards Committee.
