About Greg:
Dr. Greg Hempen is a practicing geophysicist / geological engineer. He has been a consultant with URS Corporation’s, St. Louis Office, since March 2006. He retired from the St. Louis District, Corps of Engineers in February 2006. He was involved with all the earthquake evaluations of new major project designs and of existing projects for St. Louis District through 2005. Greg edited the Corps’ Engineering Manual (EM) on Engineering and Environmental Geophysics (EM 1110-2-1806). He edited another EM on blasting for Corps’ Headquarters. Greg has a variety of publications on earthquake, blasting, and geophysical topics.
Greg is presently a Commissioner on the Missouri Seismic Safety Commission; he was the Chairperson of this Commission in its first two years of activity (1994 - 1995). He is an active member of the U.S. Geological Survey’s St. Louis Area Earthquake Hazard Mapping Project. He has taught an evening graduate class in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering (Spring 2005) for the Missouri University of Science & Technology (MS&T) and seismic resistant design at Washington University (1989 to 2004). He has taught at St. Louis University and Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville. Greg had been an instructor at several national Corps of Engineers’ professional training courses.
Greg is the Past President of the New Madrid Chapter of Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI). He has accepted Project Management of the New Madrid Earthquake Scenarios for the New Madrid Chapter of the EERI. This study, concluding in April 2012 – the Bicentennial of the New Madrid Earthquake Series, will provide comprehensive impacts from credible earthquakes in the New Madrid Seismic Region. The Scenarios will include risk-reduction recommendations for individual, public and corporate interests from future Central United States earthquakes.
Greg was involved heavily with licensure for Geologists in Missouri. Greg was involved with the statutory definition of Geologists that was ultimately successful in the mid-1980’s. Along with many others, he pursued registration of Geologists that was also successful after many years in the Missouri legislature.
