8–9 a.m. US$10 fee if attending separately.
Before you jump into the job search process, gain an understanding of the current geoscience workforce data, including salary, employment trends, and projections. Presenters will also review the fundamentals of crafting a winning résumé and how to best utilize the USAJOBS database for applications for federal employment.
- Company and Agency Information Booths
9–11 a.m. Agency and company booths will be set up to answer your career questions. Learn about each unique work culture and types of internships and careers available. Participants include Anadarko, Bureau of Land Management, Chesapeake Energy Corporation, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Hess Corporation, NASA, National Park Service, Newmont Mining, U.S. Forest Service, and the U.S. Geological Survey.

Mentors from non-profit, industry, government, and academia will answer your career questions at table stations around the room. Here are some sample questions to ask mentors.

Presentations by experienced GSA editors on the process of preparing your research for submission to scholarly journals will be followed by roundtable discussions. Space is limited, and an application is required. Applications from graduate students, early-career researchers, people getting back into research after a hiatus, post-docs, or anyone for whom this discussion is relevant are welcome.

We will discuss the current social media landscape as well as best practices, tips, guidelines, and inspirations for multiple social media platforms. We’ll also talk about how you can utilize social media to build public trust in science and scientists. Designed for scientists, ideal for beginners, but helpful for everyone!

Environmental Engineering Geology Division Student Career Mentoring Session

Please join us for a workshop/discussion with NSF Program Officers, successful award recipients, and community college faculty as we share examples of the range of possibilities in NSF-funded projects involving two-year college faculty, discuss strategies and challenges in writing and execution of federally-funded projects, hear suggestions for writing successful proposals, and consider issues raised by two-year college faculty who are interested in garnering external funds for their work. This workshop will allow participants to interact with National Science Foundation program directors and staff to learn about the proposal submission process and funding opportunities. A short introduction will be followed by break-out sessions catered to career level, where students, early-career researchers and faculty will get all questions answered and tips for preparing successful proposals.
