Structural Geology and Tectonics Division Student Fund


In 2010, at the 30th anniversary of the Structural Geology and Tectonics Division of the Geological Society of America, the Structural Geology and Tectonics Division Student Fund was initiated. The division has always supported student research and travel to conferences, field trips and short courses via membership dues and proceeds from merchandise sales. This is money well spent. Past recipients of graduate student research grants are now some of the shining stars of our field. Students represent the future of our division, and the board considers the support of students who are interested in structural geology and tectonics to be among our highest priorities. The student fund is housed at the GSA Foundation where it can grow through investments and interest as well as donations. You can donate directly to the fund, knowing that 100% of your tax-deductible donation is going to support student activities. 

The initial goal was to grow the SG&T Division Fund to $80K. We have now well exceeded that amount (more than double, at ~$190k) and are able to draw from the interest to award extra funding students who have written outstanding graduate student research grants as well as fund short courses and field trips. To really reflect the size and scope of the Division, we hope to build the fund to $200K. With this amount we will be able to greatly expand our current level of support for students and will be able to consider new categories of support. Thus we continue to ask those of you who can do so to donate even more, and we are also looking for members who would be willing to match the donations of others.
