  • 2024 Outstanding Publication Award - Nominations request (Due March 1st)

Request for nominations for the 2024 Outstanding Publication Award for the Structural Geology & Tectonics Division of the Geological Society of America.

Congratulations again to last year’s winner:

Miranda, E. A., Hirth, G., John, B. E. (2016). Microstructural evidence for the transition from dislocation creep to dislocation-accommodated grain boundary sliding in naturally deformed plagioclase. Journal of Structural Geology, 92, 30-45. doi: 10.1016/j.jsg.2016.09.002.

The Outstanding Publication Award is given annually for a published work (paper, book, or map) of exceptional distinction that clearly advances the science of structural geology or tectonics. This award is not limited to members of the Division or the Society, and awardees may be single or multiple authors, with no restrictions as to nationality, citizenship, publisher, or publishing agency. The award may not be given posthumously unless the decision to give the award is made before the death of the awardee(s).

This award is important because it serves to recognize exceptional science and creativity while also inspiring others. The nomination process is simple and comprises three components:

    (1) A full citation.

    (2) Nomination (as short as a paragraph; letters or reviews may also be included).

    Nominations might address these questions:

    • Why is the publication exceptional?

    • How has the contribution changed your work?

    • What are specific advances made by the publication?

    • How has the work influenced the work of others?

    (3) Name and address of nominator.

Nominations are due on March 1st, 2024. Please send nominations (or questions) to kevin.mahan@colorado.edu

More information on the Outstanding Publication Award, including a list of past winners, can be found on the SGT Division webpage.

  • 2024 Structural Geology and Tectonics Biennial Forum

Save the Date!  2024 Structural Geology and Tectonics Biennial Forum, June 24-27, Bellingham WA

We are pleased to announce that the 2024 SGT forum will be held June 24-27 on the campus of Western Washington University.

Initiated in 2010,  the SGT Biennial Forum is a grass-roots meeting of Structural Geology and Tectonics researchers, with the goal to advance research and training in our discipline.  The small meeting size, residential format, and shared meals foster community and cross-fertilization of ideas from researchers in different institutions and across career stages.

This year we are organizing the meeting around themes connecting to research opportunities in the host region: subduction zone geology, deformation of mafic and ultramafic rocks, collisional and transpressional orogens, magnetic fabrics, and field-geology instruction -- and we welcome contributions on other topics.  For each theme, we hope to realize some combination of field trip/workshop, invited talk, volunteered talks and posters, and/or panel discussion. We anticipate field trip(s) and workshops on June 24 and 27 and on-campus meetings (posters, talks, panel discussions, demos) on June 25 and 26.

RSVP here for more information and to indicate your interest.  Formal registration will open in February.

-- Juliet Crider (University of Washington) and Bernie Housen (Western Washington University)
