  • Please join us: History and Philosophy of Geology Division Activities in Phoenix, AZ September 22-25

    The History and Philosophy of Geology Division will host several topical sessions and social events in Phoenix.

    Please join us for our annual Business Meeting and Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, 24 September, where Professor Naomi Oreskes, Harvard University, will be recognized as the recipient of the 2019 Mary C. Rabbitt History and Philosophy of Geology Award for her rich and varied contributions to our discipline:
    In all her scholarly and public work, from continental drift to the Anthropocene, from women in science to government in science, from economic geology to NY Times editorials, Naomi Oreskes brings her deep understanding of history, as well as her wisdom and passion, to all that she does. As a geologist, historian of geo/ocean sciences, as a philosophy of science and a public figure, Dr. Oreskes is well deserving of the Mary C. Rabbitt Award.”

    The Division will also recognize Joseph Moffitt, Mississippi State University, as the recipient of the Michele L. Aldrich History and Philosophy of Geology Division Student Research Award. The Aldrich funding will assist Joey in his research on the historical interpretation of mosasaurs. 

    The History and Philosophy of Geology Division will also sponsor the Student and Friends Reception Tuesday evening, 24 September 2019. Please join us for a fun evening with friends, refreshments, and our book raffle.

    T64. Celebrating the Legacy of Professor Eldridge Moores in Global Tectonics and Societal Relevance of Geosciences
    We welcome contributions on all aspects of global tectonics, ophiolites, orogenic belts, Precambrian geology, and science for society to reflect on the scientific impact of Eldridge Moores on our research and to celebrate his distinguished career.

     T174. Great Concepts and Controversies in Geosciences Since Steno’s Introduction of the Principles of Stratigraphy in 1669
    In celebration of the 350th anniversary of Steno’s publication of Prodrumus (which led to Principles of Stratigraphy), we welcome contributions discussing the evolution of significant concepts controversies and how our current dialectic thinking is driving future concepts/controversies in modern geosciences.

    T175. Geology and Ethnology of the Canyon Lands
    This overarching session delves into all aspects of earth and human processes that affect the Southwestern canyon lands with emphasis on ideas and philosophies relating to the geology and ethnology of the Southwest.
