2025 GSA Geology and Health Division Student Travel Award Solicitation

The Geology and Health Division of the Geological Society of America (GSA) is pleased to offer Student Travel Awards of up to $200 to support student attendance at the 2025 GSA Annual Meeting.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be student members of the Geology and Health Scientific Division.

  • Applicants must be the first author on a presentation (oral or poster) to be given at the 2025 GSA Annual Meeting.

  • Award recipients must be physically present at the Geology and Health Division Awards Ceremony (date TBD, to be held during the meeting) in order to receive their travel award.

Application Instructions:
To apply, please submit a single document that includes:

  • Your name, affiliation, and contact information

  • Title of the presentation

  • A brief statement on how the travel funds will be used

Deadline: September 2nd, 2025
Notification Date: Award recipients will be notified by August 27, 2025

2025 GSA Geology and Health Division Student Research Award Solicitation

The Geology and Health Division of the Geological Society of America invites applications for the 2025 Student Research Award, providing up to $1,000 to support student research projects that align with the mission of the Division.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be student members of the Geology and Health Scientific Division.

  • Award recipients must be physically present at the Geology and Health Division Awards Ceremony (date TBD, to be held during the meeting( in order to receive their award.

Application Requirements:
Submit a research proposal (no more than two single-spaced pages, excluding references and budget justification) that includes:

  1. Project Title

  2. Statement of the Problem / Hypotheses

  3. Overall Objectives of the Project

  4. Scientific Significance – Why is this project important?

  5. Relevance to Geology and Health – How does this project align with the Division’s mission?

  6. Concise Research Plan

  7. Budget – Include a detailed budget and a budget justification (not counted in the page limit)

  8. References (not counted in the page limit)

The Geology and Health Scientific Division sponsors professional awards to be presented at the annual GSA meeting: 

Distinguished Career Award
: The award recognizes the recipient’s lifetime contributions to the field of Geology and Health. The awardee does not need to be a member of the Division

Meritorious Service Award: The award recognizes outstanding contributions to the mission of the Geology and Health Scientific Division. The awardee must be a member of the Geology and Health Scientific Division.

Outstanding Paper Award: The award recognizes a publication that has made a significant advance in the field of Geology and Health in the past 5 years. The awardee does not need to be a member of the Division.


Geology & Health Scientific Division Student Research Grant

Student Research Grant of up to $1,000 to support undergraduate or graduate student research. The application shall consist of (1) a research proposal (no more than two pages) which includes a statement of the problem, the research objectives, and how the award will be used to support the research, (2) a budget, and (3) a letter of support from the student’s advisor. Only members of the Geology and Health Scientific Division are eligible. It is expected that the student will present the results of the supported research at a National or Section meeting of the Geological Society of America within two years of receipt of the award. The student will also prepare a succinct summary of the project to be published in the Division Newsletter.

If you submitted a proposal to the GSA Graduate Student Research Grants program, you can use the same proposal for the Geology & Health Student Research Grant program. The proposal should deal with a research project that is relevant to the mission of the Geology and Health Scientific Division and you must be a student member of the division. If you are not a member, you can become a member for the modest amount of $2.00.

Geology & Health Scientific Division Student Travel Grant 

The division will award a travel grant of up to $200 to a student attending the national Geological Society of America meeting. The student must be the first author of a paper to be presented at the meeting. The application shall include a statement of how the funds will be used and the title of the paper to be given at the meeting. Only members of the Geology and Health Scientific Division are eligible for this grant. 


Geology & Health Scientific Division Poster Presentation Award

Poster Presentation Award ($200) for the best student poster in a Geology and Health Scientific Division sponsored session at the annual national meeting of the Geological Society of America. Posters showing a direct relationship between geology and health will be ranked higher in the judging. The awardee(s) is expected to provide a brief bio and write-up of their research for the Division Newsletter. The awardee should be a member of the Geology & Health Scientific Division. An application is NOT required for this award. All appropriate posters will be considered.
