During the past decade, three different community reports have addressed issues concerning the US funding structure for generating geochronologic information and driving innovation in geochronology. All three reports encourage the US geochronology community (both geochronologists and researchers who need geochronologic information) to address these issues.
The Geochronology Division is in an excellent position to provide leadership in addressing these issues. Preliminary plans to explore these opportunities include the following:
- Developing a survey for geochronologists that seeks input on:
- primary issues in generating the geochronologic information needed for their research projects
- primary issues in generating the geochronologic information needed for collaborator research projects
- opportunities to improve hardware
- opportunities to improve software
- opportunities to improve training and education
- opportunities to develop a more diverse and inclusive community of geochronologists
- Developing a survey for researchers who need geochronologic information for their projects that seeks input on:
- the primary issues in acquiring the geochronologic information needed for their projects
- opportunities to improve education
- opportunities to develop a more diverse and inclusive community of users of geochronology
- Discussing these issues, and possible solutions, during a Town Hall at the GSA 2020 Meeting
Update: See the summary of our Geochronology Consortium Survey, as presented at the EarthRates Meeting on Dec. 4, 2020. We are still accepting community responses and the survey can be found here.More information on the community report recommendations:
