Submitted for your consideration. An interesting and innovative technical session at the Annual Meeting. Perhaps you have some pertinent "gatebreaking" ideas to share with the audience.
The below session is endorsed by the Geology and Society Division:
T155. Gatebreaking: Passing along Your Biggest Lessons Learned in the Geosciences - Scientists spend countless hours on trial and error, navigating their experiments as well as their careers. These lessons are not traditionally communicated through formal publications. Many of the vital lessons learned from these experiences are passed down through mentoring. In more recent years, advances have been made to extend these lessons to a broader audience through virtual webinars and panel discussions. Increased access has the potential to breakdown the gatekeeping habits of industry and academia, where underrepresented groups disproportionately struggle to “figure it out” without the informal tips that their more traditional peers are receiving throughout their career. The expansion of virtual networking opportunities requires mentor participation in relatively new communication platforms, e.g. social media, YouTube, or virtual networking platforms. In its new hybrid format, the GSA Annual Meeting represents a unique opportunity for connecting in-person and virtual attendees through discussion and talks, reaching a broader audience beyond individual research groups or sub-disciplines. Topics can include navigating interviews, permitting, publishing, editing, setting up a lab, recruiting diverse students, engaging with the public, securing tenure, pivoting between industry and academia, and building alliances with local and/or indigenous communities.
Invited Speakers: Francisca Oboh-Ikuenobe and Isaac Crumbly.Follow this link to submit abstracts:
