The Structural Geology and Tectonics Division of GSA will hold an election for 4 open board positions Sept. 8 to Oct. 10, 2023. To ensure a complete ballot, the board has contacted prospective candidates and it appears that we have 8 people to run for the 4 open positions. However, in the interest of running a fair and open election, all members should know that they are welcome to run for one of the open positions. Descriptions of the current board, open positions, and service durations are below.
The hard deadline for submitting election materials is 5:00 PM PDT on Sept. 5, 2023.
To run, send the following to Eric Cowgill (escowgill@ucdavis.edu):
your name, title, and institution
- the position for which you are running
- a biographical statement (200-word maximum) that describes your professional background
- a candidate statement (50-word maximum) that explains why you are running
The timeline for the election is:
Sep. 5 Deadline to send bio & candidate statement to Eric by 5 PM (PDT) on 9/5/23
Sep. 8 Voting opens
Oct. 10 Voting closes
Oct. 17 Announce election results at SGTD awards ceremony & reception
Oct. 24 Announce election results to all members via email blast following the meeting
Summaries of the duties for each open position and the duration of service:
Chair
Duration: 2 years (2023-24 as chair, 2024-25 as past chair)
Summary of duties: Interacts with committees, finds people to stand for election and serve on committees, works with Sec/Treas to prepare annual report for GSA, runs the SGT Awards ceremony and reception at the annual GSA meeting.
1st Vice Chair
Duration: 3 years (2023-24 as 1st vice chair, 2024-25 as chair, 2025-26 as past chair)
Summary of duties: Manages Outstanding Student Award Program (communication with awardees, ensures they get checks), participates in board decisions
2nd Vice Chair
Duration: 4 years (2023-24 as 2nd vice chair, 2024-25 as 1st vice chair, 2025-26 as chair, 2026-27 as past chair)
Summary of duties: Manages Student grants for Short Course and Field Trips at the annual GSA meeting (communication with awardees, ensures they get checks), participates in board decisions
Secretary/Treasurer
Duration: 2 years (2023-25)
Summary of duties: Manages board finances, helps chair prepare annual report, organizes awards ceremony and board lunch at annual meeting.
In 2024 the SGTD board will need to hold an election for a vice secretary treasurer. The Vice Secretary/Treasurer is a 1-year appointment during the 2nd year of the Secretary/Treasurer's appointment and shadows them, to learn how to do those duties. Two candidates will be needed to run for that one seat.
