GSA’s Mineralogy, Geochemistry, Petrology, & Volcanology Division is please to announce its 2016 awardees:
[1] Distinguished Geologic Career Award to Donald A. Swanson, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, Hawaii National Park, HI USA.
As a field-focused geologist, Dr. Swanson combines both strong disciplinary impact in igneous processes and volcanic hazards with unusually passionate public outreach. USGS employees, particularly field-based researchers, rarely achieve the same impact in the literature as their academic counterparts, yet Dr. Swanson’s publication record is outstanding and his work has significantly directed volcanic hazards policy. The average citizen may well have benefited more from his scientific activities than from many others.
[2] MGPV Early Career Award: John M. Cottle, University of California-Santa Barbara Santa Barbara, CA, USA.
Dr. Cottle is cited as a leader in the development of novel laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) measurements and their application to tectonic questions in convergent orogens. Most pioneers of new mass-spectrometry techniques are laboratory based, and most workers at the forefront of tectonics are field based; Dr. Cottle combines both to an impressive degree.
The awards will be presented during the 2016 GSA Annual Meeting, Denver, CO September 24-28, 2016.
If you have a candidate for 2017 awards, Nominations Deadline for the 2017 Award: midnight (EDT) 15 July 2016.
