StraboSpot Virtual Workshop for Structural Geology

    July 6-10, 2020

You are invited to a free, one week long virtual workshop on how to use the NSF-EarthCube sponsored StraboSpot digital field notebook and data management system for structural geology data (with an introduction to the new microstructure mode, stratigraphic section mode, and StraboTools). StraboSpot works on iPads/Android devices and through the StraboSpot website (see www.strabospot.org for more info).

Leaders: Doug Walker (Kansas), Julie Newman and Noah Phillips (Texas A&M), and Bçsil Tikoff, Nick Roberts, Randy Williams, and Alex Lusk (Wisconsin)

Date: Week of July 6, 2020 – only MWF during this week (while you have no other field commitments!)

Format: The workshop is designed to introduce you to StraboSpot and enable you to develop a good working knowledge of its capabilities for research and teaching. There will be 3 sessions of ~ 2 hrs. each: M, W, & F (11 am PT, 12 pm MT, 1 pm CT, 2 pm ET). Tuesday and Thursday are for you to complete your own mapping projects, and there will be a staffed Help Desk to answer questions. We

encourage teams of “field partners” (any combination of faculty, students, assistants, etc.) to participate. As an added incentive, we will be able to provide a limited number of small ($250) stipends for teams that complete, upload, and make public mapping projects with original data owned by the team member(s) to the StraboSpot webpage at the end of the workshop. We anticipate a time commitment of ~10 hours for the entirety of the short course (4.5 hrs. workshop time plus additional 4-6+ hrs. for your own explorations).

Who: We welcome any faculty, students, or individuals interested in structural geology data collection. Please help us spread the word and share this with anyone who might be interested. This program may be very helpful for those who will be teaching online/virtual field geology classes!

Why StraboSpot? StraboSpot is a field data collection web and mobile app for Android and iOS devices that permits high-level data collection for research and teaching. It will eventually work seamlessly with thin section analysis, and we are already starting to develop shared community tools for the application. The vocabulary-based structure makes it is possible to standardize and organize a back-end database that can capture, sort, and share structural geology data that is typically stored only in field notebooks. The same structure also makes the app useful for teaching applications, guiding students through traditional workflows and reinforcing hierarchy of structural geology terms.

Community support: This virtual workshop is sponsored by NSF, and endorsed by the GSA Structural Geology and Tectonics Division and the GSA Geoinformatics Division
