The 80-20 rule of earthquakes

You may have heard of the 80-20 rule. It has been applied to many situations. I first heard of it when a management consultant we hired claimed that usually 80% of the work is performed by 20% of the workforce. In the insurance markets, I have it heard it claimed that 20% of the claims account for 80% of the payouts. I recently realized while studying statistics of earthquake death tolls that earthquakes with death tolls of 10,000 or more account for 82% of the total earthquake deaths. This is substantially less than 20% of earthquakes. Thus, the 80-20 rule seems to apply to work, money, and death.
