Join an exciting and enthusiastic group of educators and their families as they learn first-hand the wonders of active volcanism on the Big Island of Hawaii!
This seven-day field trip on the Big Island of Hawaii will introduce you to plate tectonics, hot spot volcanism and the geologic features and hazards associated with living on an active volcano. We will discuss volcanic edifices, eruption styles, magma evolution and see various types of lava flows, lava lakes, tree molds and lava trees, fault scarps, rifts, craters and calderas.
We will use our observations and new-found knowledge to discuss methods on how to effectively communicate geologic concepts with our peers, students, teachers and the general public.
This trip is designed for K-12 teachers but their families are very welcome. However, it will be a strenuous educational experience and all participants will be required to attend the activities every day. It is a great way for educators to share the experience with their family members. See flyer for more details.
Price : $US1399 per person (not including flights to and from Hilo, HI)
Price includes all land transport in Hawaii,light breakfasts and two dinners, all park entrance fees, field notes.

Explore New Zealand - life on a plate boundary!

Experience the many faces of a Plate Boundary in the amazing scenery of New Zealand. Volcanoes, thermal areas, glacial valleys and more. Share and learn with other educators.
This amazing field experience will take in the Earth science wonders of both the North and South islands of New Zealand. We will visit active geothermal areas, walk on volcanoes, see evidence for huge eruptions, visit earthquake zones and see the amazing glacial features of the ‘land of the long white cloud’ all while being steeped in the culture of New Zealand (and maybe a little Middle Earth).
Led by a local geoscience enthusiast and with experienced educators, this is a trip of a lifetime that will change the way you teach forever!

Explore Dynamic Iceland
Volcanoes and Glaciers on a Spreading Plate Boundary.

Join four experienced leaders in a life-changing tour of the wonders of Iceland. Stand on a mid-ocean ridge, experience all forms of volcanism, see amazing glacial landscapes and so much more.
Iceland's rich geological history and strange interplay of volcanism and glaciers makes it one of the 'must see' destinations for all who love geology. It is a place of many surprises, with every turn of the road exposing amazing sights - waterfalls, geysers, craters, U-shaped valleys, ash falls etc. Layered on top is a rich history of an amazing culture.
This trip circles Iceland and takes in such classic sites as Þingvellir, Eyjafjallajökull 2010 eruption impact, Vatnajokull Ice Cap and outburst floods, classic lava flows, Askjr (fresh caldera), coastal dynamics, and sites of cultural significance.

Rocky Mountain Field Camp for K-12 Teachers
Summer 2016
Come explore Colorado and all it has to offer with the Geological
Society of America. This trip is designed for teachers to study geology
in depth, collect rocks, minerals and fossils to take back to the
classroom and take away new lessons to use in the classroom. This
five-day, six-night trip will take you around Central Colorado and will
allow you to investigate some of the amazing geology of Colorado. Join
us as we tour a working gold mine, soak in hot springs, piece together
Colorado’s geologic history, visit famous fossil sites, and create an
EarthCache. Please note: there will be several hikes each day; some of
which are fairly strenuous.

Acadia NP Field Camp for K-12 Teachers
Summer 2016
Join the Geological Society of America on a 5-day adventure to discover some of the most exciting and fascinating geology in the continental United States. Mount Desert Island and the Schoodic Peninsula of Acadia National Park are incredible places to study glaciers, coastal processes and structural geology.
During this trip you will measure and map faults and dikes, carry out a beach transect, create a beach profile, draw cross sections, observe and interpret rock outcrops, view a granite splitting demonstration, participate in an air quality research project, determine the relative ages of the rocks, and learn about nocturnal animal behavior. Classroom activities will be incorporated into the field camp.
On our last evening, we will immerse ourselves in the Maine culture as we enjoy a lobster fest and s’mores! (We will accommodate special diets for this meal.)
This trip is great for earth science, environmental science, and pre-service teachers as well as college students.
